Having Catalonia an average unemployment rate lower than the whole of
Spain to find a working place is not an easy task for the people who try
it every day.
Explaining the employment situation in a more local environment as the city
of Vilafranca or the Penedès area, the first thing that strikes our
attention is the high representation of people coming from third countries.
Mainly Morocco, together with people from other places in the African continent.
The fact that Vilafranca and the Penedès have unemployed people may
seem strange to newcomers.
This explains that due to a certain standard of living achieved, together
with the fact that most young people have a mid or high level of education,
the unemployed people in Penedès does not like certain jobs (farming,
cattle and construction for instance) that are hard for the effort they
require and for the bad weather conditions under which those jobs have to
be developed sometimes. Therefore, people prefer being unemployed. These
jobs, with lack of local work force, are taken by people from Africa.
On the other hand, we should mention the high degree of irregularities existing
in the sector of African workers, some employers get profit from them.
